THE POWER OF SCIENCE AND LOVE

As Valentine’s Day is approaching us, it is time for us to share the love with the people close to us. This also includes our colleagues, with whom we share 1/3 of our time during working days. On average, that makes up to 90,000 hours over the course of our entire careers. For this year’s Valentine, we wanted to share the love we have towards our colleagues. As the majority of our Gisicans are engineers, we decided to spread the love and educate everyone to love engineers both professionally and on the personal level.  

When it comes to the important issues in life, it is likely that you have asked an engineer for advice. The engineer can be your close friend, partner, or your colleague. Often these questions might involve IT or any other technology that has been causing headache or our grey brain cells to tickle. It is no surprise, that even when it comes to love, we have sought advice from engineers and other scientists.

LOVE EXPLAINED BY SCIENCE

The science of love is not necessarily the love of science. However, love is a very interesting research topic. In fact, one of the biggest mysteries of mankind is none other than love. Scientists assert that even love can be explained by science. If we approach love the way a scientist or an engineer would, love can be defined as changes in the biochemistry of the brain. The best part is, it is measurable!

If you ask any engineer to explain love, they will probably explain to you the ins and outs of biochemistry. Engineers believe that there is absolutely nothing in this world that could not be explained with common sense or mathematics. This “no nonsense and just measure it” approach is the reason why we turn to our dear engineers for answers. Engineers do not explain love with poetry or abstract art. No, engineers provide you with chemical formulas.  

So, what is the formula of love? Obviously, any scientist or engineer would be able to write down the formula of love out to you in an instant. After the consultation you would know that the answer is the combination of dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin: C8H11NO2+ C₁₀H₁₂N₂O+ C43H66N12O12S2

You might be wondering now what dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin are. In laymen terms dopamine is the chemical messenger in our body that defines how we feel pleasure. Serotonin is the hormone that stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness. Oxytocin is referred to as the “love hormone”. It is associated with empathy, trust, sexual activity, and relationship-building.

3 MORE REASONS TO LOVE ENGINEERS

In case you are still not convinced why you too should love engineers, there are three good reasons why your body will feel an instant boost of dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin increase when thinking of engineers:

  1. Engineers are often described as the masters of logical thinking. They think in a practical way to solve problems.

  2. They are tech savvy. Especially when you get new machines, electronic devices and gizmos, they know how to install, configure and get the gadget ready for you. Best of all they do it in no time!

  3. When you make some of life’s hardest decisions, they help you to make a rational decision with the power of science and big data. It takes an engineer to figure out who is the best girl/boyfriend for you. The engineer will just count the plus and minus points and presto, you know who will be your perfect soulmate.
